Christian Menefee wins Texas House seat vowing to oppose Trump

“The results here tonight are a mandate for me to work as hard as I can to oppose your agenda, to fight back against where you’re taking this country,” declared Christian Menefee in his victory speech on Saturday night. Directly addressing President Trump, the newly elected congressman added, “You’ve gone nearly a year without hearing from the people of the 18th Congressional District of Texas… I look forward to [investigating your crimes].”

Christian Menefee secured his place in the U.S. House of Representatives after winning the special election runoff for Texas’ 18th Congressional District on January 31, 2026. According to the Associated Press, Menefee defeated fellow Democrat Amanda Edwards with approximately 67% of the vote, successfully reclaiming the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Sylvester Turner.
The victory for Christian Menefee carries significant weight in Washington, as it narrows the Republican majority in the House to a razor-thin 218-214 margin. During his campaign, Menefee, a former Harris County Attorney, pledged to protect immigrant communities by vowing to “tear up ICE from the roots” and push for a total overhaul of the current immigration system.

While Christian Menefee will be sworn in immediately to serve the remainder of the current term, he faces another electoral challenge in the March 3 primary. The 37-year-old attorney has signaled that his arrival in D.C. marks the beginning of a sustained legislative battle against the administration’s aggressive enforcement policies.
