In 1912, during his campaign for a third presidential term with the newly formed Bull Moose Party, Theodore Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt. While in Milwaukee, Roosevelt was shot in the chest by John Schrank, an unemployed former saloonkeeper who had been stalking him across eight states. Schrank claimed he was avenging President McKinley, who he believed had told him in dreams that Roosevelt was responsible for his death and should not seek a third term.
Remarkably, Roosevelt’s thick, folded 50-page speech, his eyeglasses case, and overcoat slowed the bullet enough to prevent serious injury. Despite being wounded, Roosevelt insisted on delivering his speech, speaking for an hour and showing the crowd his bloody shirt as proof of the attack.
Though his bravery impressed many, Roosevelt ultimately lost the election to Democrat Woodrow Wilson, with many believing his run split the Republican vote. Schrank was declared insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital.
