Danilo Medina (2012-2020) Dominican President…

Danilo Medina is a Dominican politician who served as President of the Dominican Republic for two consecutive terms from 2012 to 2020. Born on November 10, 1951 in the province of San Juan, he grew up in a modest family where he received his primary and secondary education before moving to the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo to study economics. Since his youth, he showed a great interest in politics and joined the Dominican Liberation Party founded by the historical leader Juan Bosch, where he emerged as one of the rising leaders of the party thanks to his intelligence and ability to organize.

In the 1990s, Medina became a prominent figure within the party and held leadership positions in the government, including that of President of the Chamber of Deputies. He also played a pivotal role in the Dominican Liberation Party’s electoral campaigns, contributing to Leonel Fernández’s victory in the presidency in 1996. During this period, he gained significant experience in managing government affairs and formulating public policies, which later helped him in his ambition to reach the presidency.

After his first unsuccessful attempt to run for president in 2000, Medina continued to work within the party and held senior advisory positions in the Fernández government, focusing on economic and development issues. In 2012, he ran again for president with the support of the Dominican Liberation Party and was able to win after an electoral campaign focused on economic development, social justice, and improving public services. During his first term, he focused on improving education, launching an ambitious program to reform the education system and increase the education budget to 4% of GDP, which contributed to the construction of new schools and improving the quality of education.

In the economic field, he worked to promote economic growth and attract foreign investment, as the Dominican Republic experienced high growth rates compared to countries in the region. His policies focused on developing infrastructure, supporting small and medium enterprises, and improving health and social services for the poor. He also launched programs to support farmers and boost agricultural production, which contributed to improving the standard of living in rural areas.

In 2016, he ran for a second term after a constitutional amendment allowed him to be re-elected, winning a large percentage of the vote, reflecting his great popularity at the time. During his second term, he continued his economic and social policies, but his government faced major challenges, including accusations of corruption and increasing protests against some government policies. Despite his economic successes, discontent grew due to corruption cases involving government officials, especially in relation to public construction contracts.

As his second term drew to a close in 2020, he was unable to run again due to constitutional restrictions, and sought to support another candidate from his party, but lost the election to Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party, ending the 16-year rule of the Dominican Liberation Party. After leaving the presidency, Medina continued his political career but faced legal investigations into corruption in his government, with several former officials in his administration being indicted. Despite this, Medina remains a prominent figure in Dominican politics, remembered for his period of economic growth and social reforms, but also criticized for allegations of corruption and mismanagement in some sectors.
